Stargate Project Takes Off: A Groundbreaking AI Infrastructure Initiative

On January 23, 2025, global technology leader SoftBank Group and AI pioneer OpenAI officially announced the launch of their joint venture, “Stargate,” aimed at building next-generation AI infrastructure. With a total investment of $38 billion (approximately ¥5.94 trillion), this monumental project is expected to serve as a foundation for the evolution of AI technology worldwide.

The Vision Behind the Stargate Project

The Stargate initiative is designed to enable companies and research institutions worldwide to fully leverage AI technology. Key objectives of the project include:

  • Development of Next-Generation AI Supercomputers
Creating state-of-the-art AI supercomputers combining advanced hardware and software technologies to accelerate AI training and inference.
  • Introduction of a Distributed Cloud System
Establishing global data centers to provide efficient access to large-scale AI models for businesses and researchers.
  • Geographic Expansion of AI Infrastructure
Prioritizing the Asian market, including Japan, to accelerate AI adoption in the region.

At the press conference, SoftBank Group Chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son remarked, “Stargate will open new frontiers in AI and possess the power to fundamentally transform the industrial structure of the future.”

Support from the Trump Administration and Criticism

The U.S. government has also expressed significant interest in the Stargate project. President Donald Trump announced plans to invest $100 billion in public-sector AI infrastructure to strengthen national competitiveness. However, prominent entrepreneur Elon Musk criticized the move, warning, “Government involvement risks slowing down the pace of innovation.”

AI-Related Stocks Surge: Market Optimism for the Project

Following the Stargate announcement, AI-related stocks surged. SoftBank Group’s stock price jumped by over 6%, while semiconductor companies like NVIDIA and AMD also saw significant gains. Investors view the project as a pivotal moment for the entire AI sector.

Looking Ahead: Progress Toward 2028

The Stargate project is closely aligned with a $100 billion AI supercomputer initiative jointly led by Microsoft and OpenAI. This partnership aims to establish a new AI infrastructure by 2028, enabling companies and researchers to utilize AI technologies more efficiently.

As the Stargate initiative heralds a new era of AI infrastructure, it has garnered significant attention across industries. The question remains: how far will this ambitious project propel the future of AI? All eyes are on its progress.
